Australian utility to use Tesla’s Megapack for clean energy projects

CS Energy, a Queensland energy company, has announced that it has elected Tesla’s Megapack for running a 100 MW/200 MWh energy storage project.

Australia has been established as a well-recognized market for Tesla’s energy storage business. The EV maker’s Big Battery project in South Australia became the first of its kind and offered essential services for helping to alleviate the local grid, which has been known for brownouts.

The project has encouraged several other sizeable utility-scale energy storage ventures with the help of Li-ion batteries.

Tesla has been winning many of those projects, especially after the launch of Megapack, which is modeled toward larger-scale energy storage projects.

The firm is now adding more to the list ever since Queensland declared that it would create a new 100 MW/200MWh energy storage project in Chinchilla, a town situated on the outskirts of Brisbane, and it nominated Tesla Megapack for the project.

According to sources, CS Energy will deploy a grid-scale battery near Chinchilla to deliver cheaper, cleaner, and more reliable energy to Queenslanders.

The 100-megawatt/200-megawatt per hour battery will be built up of Tesla Megapacks and form part of CS Energy’s hub at Kogan Creek.

Cameron Dick, Treasurer and Minister for Trade and Investment, said that the $150 million projects are expected to build around 80 jobs during construction and up to 10 jobs while operational.

Furthermore, the new battery system is estimated to empower the state to use its renewable energy better and stabilize the grid.

The Megapacks are anticipated to go operational by 2023. This comes amid Tesla obtaining Megapack orders of 300 MWh for the other three energy storage projects in the near state of New South Wales just last week.
