BMW, Qualcomm & Arriver partner to develop automated driving software

BMW, Arriver Software and Qualcomm Technologies have recently inked a long-term collaboration for developing next-generation AD (automated driving) technologies, extending from Level 2 Advanced Driving Assistance Systems, NCAP (New Car Assessment Program) to Level 3 High Automated driving functionalities.
The joint software development is based on the existing Automated Driving software stack of BMW launched first with the BMW iX in 2021, which will be extended further in the coming generation via this collaboration.
In November 2021, the firm announced that the next-generation BMW Automated Driving System would be ported on the Snapdragon Ride Vision SoC (system-on-chip) along with the Arriver Computer Vision and Snapdragon Ride Platform’s compute SoC supervisors managed by Snapdragon® Car-to-Cloud Services platform.
BMW Group, Senior Vice President - Driving Experience, Nicolai Martin, said that this is a significant breakthrough for the BMW Group pertaining to its Automated Driving Platform. To empower safe and sophisticated functionalities requires state-of-the-art software in all the mechanisms of the digital value chain. This forms the pillar for intellectual driver assistance systems.
The three-way partnership will focus on building an ascendable platform for Automated Driving based on common reference sensor-set specifications, architecture, and safety necessities with the toolchain, joint development, and a data center for reprocessing and storage simulation.
Under this agreement, around 1,400 specialists will be working together worldwide, including the USA, Germany, Sweden, Romania, China, and the BMW AD Test Center in the Czech Republic.
According to Senior Vice President and General Manager for automotive at Qualcomm, Nakul Duggal, developing on already commercialized components from the BMW Group and Arriver, will position the firm to encompass BMW Automated Drive software to the Snapdragon Ride platform and extend the accessibility of self-driving tech to other automakers and Tier-1s in a flexible, open, and scalable deployment framework.
