INNIO and HanseWerk AG sign LOI for a hydrogen flagship project
Against the backdrop of depleting non-renewable energy resources, green hydrogen is increasingly being considered as an energy asset. Several countries are eyeing on harnessing the enormous potential stored by hydrogen technology to achieve decarbonization goals. In this regard, the German federal states of Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein are taking concrete steps to be at the forefront of hydrogen technology development.
German energy service provider, HanseWerk AG, and INNIO have reportedly signed a letter of intent (LOI) for their collaboration on a hydrogen-fueled pilot project in Hamburg Germany. The collaboration intends to set up a 1-megawatt (MW) range hydrogen-fueled combined heat and power (CHP) plant, which will be able to cater almost entirely to the energy requirements of diverse sectors by 20235.
The joint undertaking will establish a natural gas mode Jenbacher CHP plant with an electrical output of 999 kilowatts. The plant is due to run on natural gas mixes or a 100% green hydrogen and boasts of a remarkable overall efficiency of 93%. The output is likely to fluctuate during operations with pure hydrogen or blended hydrogen.
The heat generated from the plant is planned to be used for HanseWerk’s local heating network, while the electrical energy is supposed to be used for recharging electric vehicles at the site when required. Both the companies intend to make the CHP plant operational for natural gas as early as spring 2020 and hydrogen-powered generation is due to commence the following summer.
Also, the pilot project will combine the expertise of INNIO and HanseWerk AG to execute simulations of uncontrolled and controlled blending of hydrogen in the natural gas grid.
The city of Hamburg has set high environmental targets and this project aligns with the same. President and CEO of INNIO, Carlos Lange was quoted commenting that the company along with HanseWerk AG is paving the way for a greener, more flexible, more decentralized, and more secure future energy supply in Hamburg.
