Nissan ceases production of Datsun cars in the Indian market

Japanese automaker, Nissan has recently said that it is terminating the Datsun brand in the Indian market, after nine years since the company began the brand’s global relaunch in the county.

The move comes after Nissan failed to strive the global relaunch of Datsun. In 2020, the company discontinued the brand in Indonesia and Russia along with South Africa and India which were manifested as key markets targeting its entry-level car segment.

While confirming the move to discontinue the Datson brand, Nissan India said that the production of Datsun Redi-GO has been stopped at the plant in Chennai (Renault Nissan Automotive India Private Ltd). Although, the sales of the model will continue until it has stock left.

The firm further stated that it reassures all the existing and future owners of Datsun that satisfying the customers remains its top priority. The firm will continue to offer top-notch after-sales services, warranty support, and parts availability from its national dealership network.

Incidentally, Nissan had already halted the production of two other models under the Datsun brand compact multi-purpose vehicle Go+, and entry-level small car Go.

Sources claim that this discontinuation of the Datsun brand is a part of Nissan’s global transformation strategy, which was declared in 2020.

Nissan India, in a statement, said that as part of the global transformation strategy, the firm is emphasizing on core segments and models which bring the most benefits to dealer partners, customers, and the business.

According to Nissan, in India, this includes the locally produced all-new Nissan Magnite with around 100,000 customers orders received till today.

Under this global plan, Nissan would also be exiting its Datsun business in Russia and restructure operations in some markets in the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) region. Earlier, it also declared halting of manufacturing operations in Indonesia.
